Kernan will miss 1st Round Qualifier

Stephen Kernan has been ruled out of Armagh's All-Ireland football qualifier against Monaghan after undergoing knee surgery last week.

The Crossmaglen attacker had cartilage removed from his knee and is likely to be sidelined for a number of weeks.

Orchard County boss Peter McDonnell explained: "Stephen had a segment of cartilage and bone floating around in his knee joint."

While facing Monaghan in Clones was one of the toughest draws Armagh could have got, McDonnell isn't making an issue of it.

"This is not arrogance, but it really was totally irrelevant who we drew because what we want to address is within our own group," said the school teacher, who expects to welcome midfielder Charlie Vernon back from a broken jaw for the July 4 clash.

"We feel strongly that we let Tyrone off the hook because we didn't do the things we said we'd do. That was through no-one's fault but our own.

"In a way, we are glad it's Monaghan because that provides us with a big challenge."
